New Transportation Agreement Between Poundmaker Cree Nation and LSKYSD Supports Student Success.
POUNDMAKER CREE NATION, SK. – Representatives from Poundmaker Cree Nation and Living Sky School Division (LSKYSD) celebrated a new Transportation Services Agreement with community members and families at a gathering Tuesday, August 18. The agreement formalizes a collaborative partnership between the two organizations and reflects a shared commitment to ensuring students can attend school regularly, arrive safely, and fully participate in educational opportunities.
Under the agreement, the bus route will be operated by First Student, a long-time transportation partner of LSKYSD. The route is expected to serve approximately 20 students from the community. “Safe and reliable transportation is an essential part of a student’s educational journey,” said Ronna Pethick, board chair for the division. “We believe the best outcomes for students happen when we take the time to listen, learn from one another, and work together with trust, respect, and a shared commitment to what matters most.”
Communication and safety were key topics raised by families in attendance and important factors in developing the partnership. Transportation coordinator for LSKYSD, Adedeji Akinfabiyi, outlined safety procedures and communication tools used by the division to help keep families informed about their children’s transportation experience. A representative from First Student was also at the event and invited students to take a short bus ride to become more familiar and comfortable with being on the bus before the start of the school year.
“Today's gathering gave families an opportunity to ask questions, learn about the service, and help students feel more comfortable and excited about riding the bus when school begins,” said Leon Antoine, councilor for Poundmaker Cree Nation. The signing marks an important milestone in the ongoing relationship with both organizations looking forward to continuing to work together to support student well-being, educational success, and positive experiences for students and their families.
